Vernon Forrest regains WBC crown

VERNON Forrest has dominated Sergio Mora from start to finish to regain the World Boxing Council light middleweight title with a unanimous 12-round decision. Mora had surprised Forrest with a majority decision victory to claim the belt on June 7. But Forrest emphatically avenged that defeat, using a strong left jab and big overhand right as he earned scores of 118-109, 117-110 and 119-108 at the MGM Grand Forrest improved to 41-3, with 29 knockouts. Mora fell to 21-1-1, with five wins inside the distance. Forrest was the more active fighter, using his jab and rights to keep Mora off-balance. Swelling was visible over Mora's left eye after the third, and Forrest opened a cut over the eye in the fifth. Forrest consolidated his lead with a knockdown with a left hook just before the bell to end the seventh. While Mora started throwing more punches later in the fight, he could never seriously hurt Forrest. AFP

Bilbao Chess: Anand held by Radjabov

World champion Vishwanathan Anand could not get the better of Teimour Radjabov's defence and settled for his second successive draw as second day of the BilbaoGrand Slam Final Chess tournament

did not see a single result in any of the boards. After two rounds, Norwegian prodigy Magnus Carlsen continues to lead the field with four points, while Anand has two, following his back-to-back draws. A new system of scoring is being tried on an experimental basis in this all-star event. A player gets three points for winning a game and one for a draw. This system gives an edge to a player who scores a win and a loss, netting three points, over a player who scores two draws, which fetch him just two. Anand played a solid system against the Sveshnikov variation of the Sicilian but failed to gain any advantage from the opening. Radjabov was well prepared for the game and he made an interesting pawn sacrifice on the 12th move. Realising it would be too dangerous to try to keep the extra pawn, Anand returned it in order to complete his development but had to be content with an equal game. Radjabov traded pieces and simplified the position. The players agreed to split the point in a dead drawn opposite colour bishop ending after 34 moves.

Bendtner: I'll Do Great Things At Arsenal

There has been a lot of buzz about the 20-year-old for several years already, and he has managed to impress more often than not whenever Arsene Wenger gives him a game. Bendtner has now caught international attention with his inspirational performance during the Danes shock 3-2 victory over Portugal during midweek, which he says is a sign of things to come. "You are going to see even more of me," he boomed in an interview for the Telegraph. "I'm going to progress even more. The manager knows as well that I have plenty more to my game than has been shown. But as I said I'm sure it will come. When you see me play with my national team it's like when I was at Birmingham. Once I get a few games going then I don't see any problem." One of the things going for him is that Bendtner doesn't lack for confidence, as evidenced by his answer when asked whether he has any weaknesses to his game. "No," he said with total assurance, adding: "I'm all round. I'm lucky I have the size. You have more power and you're more likely to hold the ball up when you're a tall guy. I'm fairly quick. For me, you have to believe in everything you do. There's a difference between arrogance and self-belief. Doubt is the enemy." Bendtner once said that Zlatan Ibrahimovic is the striker he can most relate to, and when the interviewer asked whether that was still the case, he said: "Yeah, I think so. I like the ball at my feet. I feel I can play the ball at my feet and play the passes. I like to go in behind as well. If I play with someone who likes to go deep, I can play on the shoulder. It's no problem to me." Finally, Bendtner commented on the bust-up he has with Emmanuel Adebayor during the closing stages 5-0 defeat to Tottenham in the semi-final of the Carling Cup last season, insisting that it is very much a thing of the past. "It is just a thing that happened," he added. "It's out of the way now. At the end of the day we are a team and need to work together. That's the only solution."
